Adventure Prep

Get ready for your adventure and come prepared!  Here are all the need to knows for your upcoming trip/rental with Wheelies and Waves:

  • For The Water - What To Wear

We will provide you with the necessary equipment for your journey down the river or on the lake. Complimentary gear includes helmets, life jackets, and paddles.  We also offer wetsuit booties for rent if you do not have appropriate footwear with you. All other clothing and personal items are your responsibility to bring along. All of our gear is specific to your activity, top of the line, well maintained, and thoroughly cleaned after every use.

  • Do Not Wear Or Bring

    • Cowboy boots, high heels, etc. Wear shoes that will stay on your feet in swift moving water, swimming and are okay to get dirty or wet.
    • Heavy clothing that will weigh you down in the river such as sweats or jeans. We DO NOT recommend wearing cotton clothing on any of our adventures or if you are renting.
    • Clothing that impedes your freedom of movement like leather or formal wear.
    • Your personal life jacket that you use for fishing or jet skiing. We provide life jackets with all our tours and rentals.
    • Smaller personal items such as jewelry, keys, electronics, and wallets. You will not need your credit card on the river. We don’t currently provide lockers at either location, be prepared to store your valuables in your car while you are on the expedition.
  • What To Wear And Bring On Every Trip

    • Swimsuits, fast drying shorts, appropriate river shoes, etc. for the river
    • Dry clothes and towels for after the trip
    • Water
  • For Summer’s Warm Sunny Days

In the summer months, the air temperatures are more comfortable, but the water is still chilly in Crested Butte and Gunnison. On these warmer weather days, people like to stay cooler by wearing less. We suggest the following items for warmer weather:

    • Swimsuits
    • Shorts (nylon or other quick drying material)
    • River shoes that will not fall off in swift water and are okay to get dirty
    • Shirt the covers your shoulders/arms (to avoid sunburned shoulders
    • Baseball Hat
    • Sunglasses with Chums/Croakies or a retainer string. Please do not bring expensive sunglasses that you will be upset if you loose them.
    • Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 rating
    • Water to drink.

For inclement or unseasonably cool summer weather, we suggest a synthetic layering system that will continue to keep you warm when it gets wet.

  • For Spring, Rainy Days, Cool Days, And Crisp Autumn Breezes

Mornings and evenings in the Gunnison Valley can be chilly.  When paddling in cooler weather, avoid wearing cotton clothing which will only make you colder. Keep yourself warm when wet with synthetics or wool using a layering approach. Please be prepared for unexpected weather, as the weather in Colorado changes quickly!

  • For Adventures In Colder Weather, We Strongly Recommend

    • Wetsuits, splash jackets and river shoes (we rent wetsuit booties at both locations)
    • River shoes that will not fall off in swift water and are okay to get dirty
    • A synthetic non-cotton layerings to wear under your splash jacket/rain coat, such as fleece that will continue to keep you warm while wet… NO COTTON.
    • A fleece or wool winter hat or beanie… NO COTTON.
    • Fleece or wool socks. Once again, NO COTTON.

Note: We Are Adamant About Our Customers Not Wearing Cotton On The River When It Is Cold Outside As A Matter Of Safety. Cotton Does Not Wick Water From Skin And Dramatically Increases Body Heat Release, Leaving You Out In The Cold Without Any Insulation. Cold Rafters Are Not Happy Rafters, And We Want You To Stay Warm And Have Fun!

  • Layering Tips

We preach  layering in synthetic clothing, this gives you the ability to shed or add layers for the conditions as they change, leaving you happier and warmer! When choosing layering synthetics you should look for clothing (no cotton!) made of things named lene for your Base Layer, Capilene, polypropylene etc… Under Armour is probably the most commonly known example of these lenes.
