Why Buying an Electric Bike Locally is the Smart Choice

September 5, 2025

Thinking about investing in an electric bike? Whether you’re new to e-bikes or upgrading to a more advanced model, where you buy matters—and going local can make all the difference. Here's why buying an electric bike from a local shop like Wheelies and Waves in Crested Butte is the smartest move you can make.

1. Local Expertise and Trail Knowledge

When you shop locally, you're not just getting a bike—you’re getting the insight of people who ride the same trails you do. At Wheelies and Waves, we test the bikes we sell on Crested Butte and Gunnison terrain. We know which models handle steep climbs best, which tires grip on loose rock, and what battery range you’ll need for an all-day adventure. Our team can steer you toward the perfect setup for Slate River trails, Hartman Rocks, or mellow town cruises.

2. Ongoing Service and Maintenance

Buying online may seem convenient until you need a tune-up or your bike throws an error code. With a local shop, you're never left to figure it out alone. We offer ongoing service, maintenance packages, and emergency repairs so your bike is always adventure-ready. Need help with tire pressure, brake adjustments, or firmware updates? Just roll in—we’ve got your back.

3. Test Rides + Personalized Fit

Not all e-bikes are created equal—and finding the right frame size, motor power, and riding position makes a huge difference in comfort and performance. At Wheelies and Waves, you can test ride different models before you buy. We'll help you dial in seat height, handlebar placement, and suspension settings for a custom fit that feels amazing from your very first ride.

4. Support Small Business and the Local Community

When you buy from a local bike shop, your money stays in the community. You’re supporting jobs, local events, trail stewardship, and youth programs. Wheelies and Waves partners with local outdoor initiatives and recreation groups to keep our trails clean, open, and fun for everyone. Shopping with us is an investment in the place you love to ride.

5. Special Local Promotions and Rebates

Many local and state e-bike incentives are easier to access when you buy through a local dealer. We'll walk you through the rebate process and help you apply for offers like:

Colorado State E-Bike Rebates (up to $1,100 off for income-qualified applicants)

GCEA (Gunnison County Electric Association) E-Bike Rebates (up to $150–$500)

Local discounts and seasonal sales

Bottom Line? Buying an e-bike locally gives you the right fit, expert support, and a direct connection to the community you're riding in. Visit Wheelies and Waves to test ride, ask questions, and find the perfect e-bike for your mountain lifestyle.

Paddle Safety 101: How to Stay Safe on the Water in Crested Butte
April 29, 2025
Planning to paddle the Slate River? Here's what you need to know about snowpack and runoff. Snowpack = Paddle Season : The Slate River’s water level depends on how much snow accumulates in winter. In high-snow years, you’ll see a longer, deeper paddling season—perfect for SUP adventures through the end of July! Timing Matters : Late May through mid-July tends to offer the best flows, but that can shift each year based on the melt rate. Safety Tip : High snowpack can lead to fast, cold, and high water in spring. Always wear a PFD and leash, and check conditions before heading out. You can only float the Slate River between 90-900 CFS. Local Insight : Wheelies and Waves keeps tabs on the river—stop by or call to get real-time conditions and gear up for your best float yet.
